What are organic sunflower kernels?**

Organic sunflower kernels are creamy white to light gray seed kernels that are produced by the large flower heads of the Helianthuus annuus plant, which is commonly known as the common sunflower. These tiny, delicious kernels can be found within the inedible, black and white striped hulls or shells, which need to be cracked open before the seed itself can be eaten.

The National Sunflower Association claims that sunflowers are native to America and may even be among one of the first plants to be cultivated in this country. In particular, Native Americans have utilized the plant's roots, seeds, flowers, stems and other parts as an important food source, pigment dyes and many other various purposes for over 5,000 years.

Furthermore, sunflower seed kernels have been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to support optimal health, with the seed's many health benefits even being documented by Taoist medical practitioners.

Rich in heart-healthy fats and other beneficial nutrients, sunflower kernels are a highly nutritious, delicious and versatile healthy snack with a number of nutritional benefits. They can be consumed directly on their own or added to other healthy snacks.

What makes organic sunflower kernels a great addition for your survival cache?**

Organic sunflower kernels are packed with a variety of potent antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other health-supporting compounds. More than just an incredibly nutrient-dense superfood, sunflower kernels also make for a highly versatile ingredient that can be utilized in a number of different ways.

To make homemade sunflower oil, sunflower kernels can be thoroughly ground using a blender, hand grinder or mortar and pestle and then roasted for 20 minutes in an oven at 300 degrees Fahrenheit in order to separate the sunflower oil from the kernels. You can further extract more sunflower oil by processing the cooked mixture in an oil press. The resulting sunflower oil can then be used as either a versatile carrier oil or a cooking oil with a high smoke point.

Other ways to use sunflower kernels is to either grind them into flour or roast them and blend them with salt to create DIY sunflower seed butter. You can even make homemade sunflower seed tea by boiling a mixture of two tablespoons of roasted sunflower kernels and one liter of water. Allow this mixture to boil for around 10 minutes, then turn off the heat and cover the pot. Once it has cooled to a sufficiently warm temperature safe for drinking, strain the liquid and drink as you would with any herbal tea.

Since it is a great source of plant-based protein (complete with all 8 essential amino acids), healthy fats, vitamin E and other nutrients, sunflower kernels can also be used as a useful barter item when SHTF. If you want to extend the shelf life of your sunflower kernels, you can even use oregano essential oil to help keep them fresh and preserve the kernels’ overall taste and nutritional benefits.

How nutritious are sunflower kernels?**

Boasting an impressive nutritional profile, sunflower kernels contain a diverse range of essential vitamins, minerals and other beneficial plant compounds, such as dietary fiber, protein, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, manganese, zinc, copper and vitamins A, B1, B3, B6, B9, C and E. Similar to many other plant seeds, sunflower kernels are also packed with healthy fats, including beneficial polyunsaturated fats, linoleic fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acids, omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, and other essential fatty acids. Compared to flax seeds and chia seeds, sunflower seed kernels contain higher levels of protein, copper and vitamins B6 and E.

In terms of antioxidants, sunflower kernels are particularly rich in vitamin E. Additionally, according to a study that appeared in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, sunflower kernels contain one of the highest concentrations of phytosterols among all the most commonly consumed nuts and seeds in America – only being rivaled by pistachio nuts. Other antioxidants found in sunflower kernels include selenium, phenolic acids and flavonoids.
